🏅 Dwarf Hairgrass – Grower Level Badge
🌿 Plant Name: Dwarf Hairgrass (Eleocharis spp.)
🎯 Difficulty Level: ★★☆☆☆ (Intermediate)
💡 Light Requirement: 💡💡💡 (Medium to High)
🌬️ CO₂ Needs: 🌬️🌬️ (Recommended for best results)
🪴 Planting Style: Foreground, carpeting
⏱️ Growth Speed: ⏳ Moderate
🛠️ Maintenance: ✂️ Trim to maintain compact growth
🧠 Skill Tip: Spread in small tufts ~2–3 cm apart and use aquascaping tweezers for easy planting. Trimming promotes horizontal runner growth.
Eleocharis Parvula
A compact, low-growing species of Eleocharis that propagates by sending out short runners near the parent plant. It looks most attractive when planted in small, closely spaced bunches, eventually forming a lush, dense carpet. An excellent choice for the foreground, suitable for both large and small aquariums.

🌱 Dwarf Hairgrass Care & Planting Instructions
🔹 Overview
Dwarf Hairgrass is a popular carpeting plant known for its fine, grass-like appearance and ability to form a lush green lawn in aquariums. It’s ideal for foreground planting and provides a natural, soft look to aquascapes.
🛠️ Preparation & Planting
1. Substrate
Use nutrient-rich substrate or aqua soil to support healthy root development.
Fine-grain substrates work best for holding down delicate roots.
2. Planting
Divide the hairgrass into small clumps (5–6 blades each).
Plant these clumps a few centimeters apart using aquascaping tweezers.
Bury just the roots — avoid pushing the crown (where roots meet blades) too deep.
☀️ Lighting & CO₂
1. Lighting
Moderate to high lighting (8–10 hours daily) is essential for compact, horizontal growth.
In low light, hairgrass may grow tall and lose its carpeting effect.
2. CO₂ Injection
Strongly recommended for faster, denser growth.
Without CO₂, growth is possible but much slower and more prone to algae.
✂️ Maintenance
Trimming: Trim regularly to encourage horizontal runners and keep the carpet neat.
Algae control: Good flow, proper CO₂, and stable fertilization will reduce algae risks.
Remove dead or melting leaves during water changes.
🌿 Propagation
Dwarf Hairgrass spreads via runners, which form new shoots.
With good lighting and CO₂, it will carpet the foreground over several weeks.
